The hardest part about french is the pronunciation, i think, as we've borrowed so many words from them post norman invasion that english is the germanic language that has the most in common with the romance tongues, and french is, due to their origin as a germanic people (the franks) the most germanic romance language.. It absolutely is the most difficult germanic language (the fsi estimates that it takes ~1.5x longer to learn than german and about twice as long to learn as dutch and the continental scandinavian languages).. English isn't the most difficult language out there (i'm willing to be sanskrit can't be that easy), but it is seen as one of the most difficult of the western world. learning cyrillic, or mandarin, or arabic, with a completely different alphabet, would obviously be more of a challenge than just learning how words are written in a different order.. Learning a new language is never an easy thing to do, but there are ways to make it easier.there are also ways to make it more difficult. aiming to learn french or spanish comes with its own set of difficulties, but most of the learning is in new vocabulary and grammar..
